New telephony solution enables National Library of Wales to operate in Welsh language throughout all its communications

Aastra develops IntelliGate 7.7 solution to meet customer need for local language support

National Library of Wales (NLW) or Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru has implemented Aastra’s IntelliGate 7.7 telephony solution to enable staff to work seamlessly in the Welsh language throughout all their communications.

Founded 101 years ago, National Library of Wales is a legal deposit library located in Aberystwyth. It prides itself on being at the forefront of technology and led the way in the digitisation of manuscripts and maps.

The Library employs 300 staff, 70 per cent of whom speak Welsh. Creating close links with the Welsh language is important for many businesses throughout Wales, not least those in the public sector where it is a requirement that they are able to operate in a bilingual environment. The NLW already had a bilingual website and intranet, but they wanted to take this integration one step further.

“The Welsh language is often overlooked by technology but it is integral to everything we do here at The National Library of Wales,” said Andrew Green, Librarian of The National Library of Wales. “As a part of our drive to get the Welsh language integrated into all our communications we started talking to Aastra, our telephony provider about putting the Welsh language into their IntelliGate phone solution.”

Aastra agreed that the Welsh language was an important function that they should look to integrate. Working closely with National Library of Wales, Aastra developed a solution that incorporated the Welsh language into its award winning IntelliGate range. Users can now select Welsh prompts on the displays of a wide range of IntelliGate system telephones including digital, IP, cordless and computer-based options.

Mike Ballantine, Business Development Manager at Aastra UK said: “We believe that Aastra is the first company to offer such advanced solutions in Welsh. We felt it is important to give tools to help and encourage the use of Welsh in the workplace and the office phone is one of the most prevalent tools in day-to-day business to do so.”

National Library of Wales is using the IntelliGate telephony solution throughout their communications internally at the library.
